Berks Nature: PA Land Conference 2023 Co-Hosts Offer Remarkable Facilities for Reception and More
On Wednesday, April 26, the 2023 Pennsylvania Land Conservation Conference begins with a series of field adventures: the mobile seminars (see agenda page for more information). After spending the day exploring conservation and community items of interest throughout Berks County, day one conference attendees will end their day of exploration and learning at a place filled with robust opportunities for continued exploration and learning: Berks Natureâs headquarters building, The Nature Place.Â
The Rookery at The Nature Place
The annual PA Land Conference reception (April 26, 5-7PM) is an enjoyable kickoff to the annual conference, an opportunity for meaningful reconnection with colleagues in the conservation community (and connecting with new colleagues, too) over a deliciously catered dinner experience, including an open bar. The setting couldnât be more exciting for the conservation crowd. The Rookery at The Nature Place, where the reception is located, is a gem of a location in the heart of a thriving conservation organizationâs headquarters.Â
The Nature PlaceÂ
The Nature Place is a model for forward-thinking conservation spaces, and most of its design reflects the broad commitment to environmental learning and conservation in Berks Natureâs work. Located in the heart of a reclaimed public park space saved from a hurricane-related dam flooding event in the early 2000s, The Nature Place reflects Berks Natureâs partnerships with the city of Reading and Berks County. Nestled into the heart of urban Reading, this oasis of nature astonishes with new opportunities for learning around every corner.

DCNR To Celebrate âConnecting More In 2024â During First Day Hikes Across Pennsylvania Public Lands
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) today announced it will host nearly 60 guided hikes in 43 state parks and two forest districts on New Yearâs Day, as part of the nationwide âFirst Day Hikeâ efforts. These guided hikes, all taking place on January 1, are designed to promote a healthy start in the new year while offering families an opportunity to forge new and stronger connections with the outdoors.
âFirst Day Hikes are always a great way to start the new year in natural spaces, and this year we are focusing on building connections to public lands,â DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. âWhether it is learning about the wonderful programs we offer at our parks, finding a new recreational hobby, or learning about the history of Pennsylvania through public lands, we encourage Pennsylvanians and visitors to connect more in 2024.â State park and forest staff–as well as volunteers–lead the hikes, which are usually about one or two miles. Some hikes can be longer depending on the park and its terrain.

Pollinator Pitstop Program Starts a Community-Wide Movement Thanks to West Vincent EAC
The West Vincent Pollinator Pitstop Program was designed by the West Vincent Environmental Advisory Council to blanket our township in native flowers. The goal is to provide residents with free and low-cost native plants that benefit our pollinators and birds and beautify our world. Along the way, we hope to learn together about biodiversity, how to have less lawn to mow, how to fix wet areas, ways to keep our leaves and stormwater on our properties, organic lawns and gardens, and, especially, the physical and mental health benefits of being in and connecting with nature and our neighbors.Â
Â
What we didnât expect was how it would capture the imagination and hearts of so many people, that it would be the springboard for so many additional projects to benefit the environment.Â

Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy Places 64-Acre Knob Mountain Property Under Easement Due to Generous Sportsman’s Donation
A true sportsman understands and champions conservation. In fact, hunters have been some of the conservation movementâs biggest advocates since the beginning. After all, it was President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid hunter himself, who went on to create the United States Forest Service and conserved approximately 230 million acres of public land. Roosevelt recognized that in utilizing the countryâs natural resources, we also had a responsibility to ensure that those same resources were sustainable for generations to come. He wrote, âWe have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune.â
This past year, the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy (NPC) had the opportunity to work with a like-minded sportsman committed to doing his part through the conservation of his 64-acre property in Columbia County.

Introduction to Heart of Uwchlan Project
The Heart of Uwchlan Project arose out of Toni Gorkinâs Pennsylvania Master Naturalist education; it was approved by the Uwchlan Township Environmental Advisory Council and has the support of the Uwchlan Township Board of Supervisors. The Heart of Uwchlan team has been small, about six volunteers, due to COVID, but its members include two Master Watershed Stewards and now another PA Master Naturalist. Hours are logged to the PA Master Naturalist and Master Watershed databases. The sites of the gardens were chosen in consultation with the leadership of the Townshipâs parks and grounds maintenance and the Township Manager.

Celebrating Community Conservation: The Protection and Debut of Healcrest Green
After years of working with the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation (BGC), the Environmental Charter School (ECS), and previous landowners, the Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) has protected Phase 1 of the Healcrest Green project.
Prior to its protection, the green space served as a farm, a community learning and gathering space, and as an unofficial trail for nearby Garfield residents. The goal for the green space is to open it for public use as a place for passive recreation and enjoyment of nature, community gardening, and an active outdoor classroom for ECS. The protection of this parcel and adjacent acquisitions currently in progress will deliver a host of environmental benefits that will further enhance the neighborhood including improved air and water quality, stormwater absorption, sound buffering, urban cooling, and wildlife habitat protection.
