The Pennsylvania Environmental Council is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that protects and restores the natural and built environments through innovation, collaboration, education and advocacy. PEC’s Pittsburgh Office, one of four regional offices across Pennsylvania, actively engages in projects and policy initiatives that promote land and water-based recreational opportunities, protection and conservation of water resources, promotion of forward-thinking energy and climate strategies, and sustainable development of communities and landscapes.

Position Summary:

The Communications Coordinator works with the Director of Communications to develop and produce compelling multimedia content, maintain and improve communications infrastructure, and ensure that PEC’s message reaches the right audiences.

PEC’s external communications utilize a variety of media and mechanisms including our website, podcasts, monthly newsletters, videos produced in-house, press releases, social media, and more. In that mix, we are looking for a Communications Coordinator who can focus on the operations and content of our website(s). Specifically, we are continually revamping www.pecpa.org and plan to include the Communications Coordinator in that process with eventual responsibility for keeping the site functioning (with contractor support) as well serving as the primary caretaker and content provider (with support from policy and program staff).

While there are technical aspects of this work – we are not looking solely for a website manager; rather, someone comfortable with WordPress functionality who also possesses a proven ability to write and report.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with external contractors to maintain and improve the PEC website;
  • Identify and develop story ideas; research, write, edit, format, and publish web content;
  • Compile and distribute monthly newsletter; manage email lists and release schedules;
  • Populate social media feeds with timely and relevant posts;
  • Assist with a variety of multimedia production tasks including graphic design and layout, copyediting and proofreading, photography, video, and audio work;
  • Maintain and curate digital asset libraries;
  • Monitor and prepare reports on audience metrics; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific required skills:

  • Exceptional writing, verbal communication, and organizational skills;
  • Experience with WordPress and functional understanding of website infrastructure;
  • Experience managing social media accounts on behalf of an organization or business; and,
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, or in locations other than Pittsburgh, as reasonable and necessary for performance of duties.

Desired skills:

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, Audition, and InDesign;
  • Photography and/or videography; audiovisual postproduction;
  • Graphic design and layout;
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO); familiarity with web and social media analytics tools; and,
  • Experience working or volunteering for a nonprofit organization or mission-driven enterprise.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have substantial writing and editing experience across multiple platforms and media. Commitment to PEC’s organizational mission.

Compensation:

This position offers a competitive salary in the $38,000 to $45,000 range. This is an entry-level, salaried position, commensurate with experience, and includes an attractive benefits package (medical benefits, vacation, holidays, 403(b), life insurance).

Location:

PEC’s Pittsburgh Office is located at 810 River Avenue, Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Travel to other locales in the region and state will be required. There is an opportunity to work in a hybrid model of office/remote work.
