Mapping/Program Coordinator

Position Summary:
The Mapping/Program Coordinator is a full-time, exempt position, located in either the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Pittsburgh or State College offices. The Mapping/Program Coordinator will provide GIS and mapping support to all of PEC’s programs through the collection and maintenance of data, and creation of online and print map products. The Mapping/Program Coordinator reports to a Program Manager.

Position Activities

  • Managing PEC’s GIS data and resources
  • Maintaining an organized database
  • Creating and editing shapefiles
  • Digitizing data from static maps
  • Communicating with partners to share data
  • Ensuring accuracy, relevance, and data quality
  • Using GIS to perform analyses, such as trail gap prioritization exercises
  • Maintaining familiarity with data sources that may be of use or interest for PEC’s work
  • Creating and maintaining map products to support PEC’s programs
  • Using a combination of writing, multimedia, and mapping to create engaging Story Maps
  • Creating and maintaining online interactive maps, ensuring user-friendliness and accuracy
  • Producing high-quality static maps for reports, meetings, and other purposes at the request of PEC staff
  • Collaborating with PEC staff and outside partners on mapping needs
  • Communicating with staff and partners to understand needs and working together to find the best solution
  • Using creative problem-solving skills to fulfill mapping requests
  • Providing additional support to Trails and Recreation program projects
  • Helping to produce reports, including reviewing and distilling plans, doing research and writing, and occasional field work
  • Assisting with public engagement and outreach
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Required Skills

  • Proficiency with the ESRI suite of products including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Story Maps
  • Familiarity with Python, Arcade, and/or SQL as they relate to GIS preferred
  • Strong cartography skills preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, writing, research, and creative problem-solving capabilities
  • Must be able to work on a team and independently


A bachelor’s degree in geography or GIS, or a degree in environmental studies/science, outdoor recreation, or natural resource management with a strong GIS background is preferred. The successful candidate should have a passion for the environment, conservation, and/or outdoor recreation.


This is a salaried position commensurate with experience within a range of $35,000-$40,000 annually and includes an attractive benefits package (medical benefits, vacation, holidays, 403(b), life insurance, et cetera).


This position will be based at either the Pittsburgh office, located at 810 River Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, or the State College office, located at 2009 Cato Avenue, State College, PA 16801. PEC has a hybrid work policy. Occasional travel to other locales in the region and state will be required. Due to travel requirements, candidates must have a valid driver’s license.
