Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art

For the summer of 2021, the Brandywine Conservancy is offering a paid internship in Preserve Stewardship. The Preserve Stewardship Intern will have the opportunity to learn about the workings of a land trust, become familiar with local flora, and gain experience in preserve stewardship and management techniques. This is a hands-on position that will include the following duties:  basic land management tasks (mowing, trimming, etc.), invasive plant control, trail pruning and mowing, maintaining native plant gardens, and restoration of natural areas and hedgerows. The intern will be spending time assisting with routine tasks at several of our nature preserves and lands we manage near the Chadds Ford campus, including the Laurels Preserve, Miller Farm and Waterloo Mills. Tools used in the course of the work (after sufficient training) will include power string trimmers, hand and power saws, pruners, all-terrain vehicle, and tractor.

Applicants are expected to have, or working towards, an academic background in one of the environmental or natural sciences (ecology, biology, botany, forestry, wildlife management, etc.), or in lieu of academic qualifications, applicants should be able to demonstrate a passion for any of the above-mentioned natural sciences, enjoy working outdoors, and should have an interest and some experience with basic land management tasks. Applicants should be prepared for labor-intensive outdoor work in all weather and can interact positively with visitors. Familiarity with Microsoft Office software and the ability to read and interpret maps are desired. Once trained, the intern must be willing and able to work independently with little supervision.

The Preserve Stewardship Intern will report to the respective Preserve Managers. The position pays $13 per hour at 37.5 hours per week for 12 weeks, preferably beginning in June and ending in August.  A valid driver’s license and proof of the ability to work in the US is required. Please note housing is not provided.
