Day 1

9:00AM - Noon | Fundamentals of Contemporary Trail Planning and Management

Carefully planned and managed trails provide a quality user experience that is sustainable in the long term and can be economically beneficial for the organization, municipality, or agencies responsible for them. Creating and executing a strong management plan is crucial for both the on the ground care of your valuable trail asset, as well as for operational budgets. This session introduces a process for developing such a plan for new trails as well as existing trails. Fundamentals include a discussion of the five core planning considerations that are cornerstones of contemporary trail management and planning: Physical, environmental, and economic sustainability as well as quality user experience and positive community benefit.

1:00PM - 4:00PM | Fundamentals of Site Analysis

Successful multi-use trail projects require a comprehensive site evaluation (extending to the surrounding area beyond the trails physical corridor.) This site evaluation should assess factors such as trail alignment, potential resource impact(s), potential environmental opportunities, as well as any existing physical and environmental constraints, and will be used to guide the design parameters. Trail managers will invariably run against unique challenges or be presented with opportunities that require situational refinement of these parameters, but by being open to the opportunities and aware of challenges, you can help ensure the health, safety, and sustainability of the trails you manage.

Day 2

9:00AM - Noon | Fundamentals of Trail Design & Layout

Design parameters identify the technical specifications that will drive the design, construction, maintenance, and resource allocation for a specific trail type. These parameters should both be a direct result of the trail management organizations’ identification and development of a set of intentional best management practices (BMPs) and use criteria for a particular trail and address the project’s unique set of challenges and opportunities as identified in site analysis.  Building on lessons learned on day one, instructors will discuss basic materials, equipment, tools and mobilization considerations for trail layout and construction.
