WeConservePA Advocacy Manager Brad Barkdoll, along with staff from the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy, hosted a multi-site visit of two conservation areas under the Conservancy’s care in the heart of Juniata County. Attending the visit was State Representative Perry Stambaugh, staff from State Senator Judy Ward’s office, and Walker Township Supervisor Steve Casner.

The visit began with a visit to the Port Royal Wetlands. Protected in 2003, the 14-acre nature park sits adjacent to the Walker Township Park, providing a short nature trail, constructed ponds, wetlands, and an open field for year-round passive recreation for the community. Attendees had the opportunity to meet a small work crew from the Youth Advocate Program, who have been working with Conservancy staff to clear trails and debris as well as construct a walking bridge for trail users. Following a brief information session presented by Executive Director Jason Beale, guests were invited to walk the trail system. The creation of the park was done in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with settlement funds from a private company’s Federal Clean Water Act violations.

The second stop of the visit was to Greg’s Woods. The 33-acre area, donated by Beverly and Robert Grening, is protected in honor of the late Gregory Alan Grening, whose special fondness of the woods led him to spearhead the protection of the area for most of his life. Attendees had a moment to reflect on Greg’s life and learn more about the area near the trailhead, which is marked with a plaque in Greg’s honor, before walking the loop trail. Greg’s Woods is open to the public for non-motorized recreation.
