The Buck Hill Conservation Foundation is grateful for a Monroe County Open Space matching grant which has helped to fund the improvement of the Spruce Mt. Trail. The approximate five-mile loop, with alternate trails, features a spectacular panoramic summit view, including Delaware Water Gap. The trail is possible through a cross-easement agreement with the Buck Hill Falls Company and Spruce Lake Retreat.
Trail improvements on this moderately difficult trek include trail grading, a bridge crossing Griscom Creek, and new trail signage. The trail entrance and parking is at the Buck Hill Conservation Foundation’s Chestnut Mountain Preserve trailhead on Rt. 191, 4.3 miles north of Mountainhome in Monroe County. A trail map titled “Traces on the Mountain“, available on the BHCF website, points out features such as the site of a former saw mill dating back to the Civil War period.
Established in 1993, the mission of The Buck Hill Conservation Foundation is to preserve and protect the land in and around Buck Falls, to promote the health of the local forest and watershed, and to foster appreciation of the area’s natural beauty.
