In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT) was honored with the Trailblazer Award at PEC’s 2026 Western Pennsylvania Environmental Awards dinner, May 6 in Pittsburgh.
Spanning 70 miles along Laurel Ridge, the LHHT offers an abundance of opportunities to the public. Hiking, camping, hunting, cross country skiing, and an internationally renowned ultramarathon race are among the activities that many enjoy on the expansive trail. Outdoor recreation opportunities draw visitors from around the world, but many also use it to experience nature and find peace – making this trail an invaluable asset to our region.
Mike Mumau, Laurel Highlands Division Manager with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Parks and Forests, accepted the award on behalf of the LHHT community. But the Trailblazer Award truly belongs to the many individuals and organizations that have worked tirelessly to build and sustain the trail for over half a century. A strong collaboration between DCNR, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Pennsylvania Parks & Forests Foundation, and the all-volunteer Ridge Runners maintenance crew keeps the trail alive and in tip top shape for all to enjoy.
