About Lumber Heritage Region

The Lumber Heritage Region is proudly one of Pennsylvania’s 12 State-Designated Heritage Areas, representing a unique facet of the commonwealth’s rich history. Established in 1989, the Pennsylvania Heritage Areas Program is a comprehensive economic development initiative that highlights the state’s diverse natural, cultural, and industrial legacies.

Administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, this program unites regions across the state through cross-sector partnerships. These collaborations foster a distinct “sense of place” that not only strengthens local economies but also creates vibrant, livable communities that draw private investment and enrich Pennsylvania’s tourism industry.

Each of the 12 Heritage Areas is independently managed, bringing to life the unique history, resources, and communities within its boundaries. Today, these Heritage Areas reach into 57 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, preserving, enhancing, and showcasing the stories and landscapes that make each region a vital part of Pennsylvania’s shared heritage.
