National Wildland Firefighter Day (NWFFD) is observed on July 2 each year to honor the dedication and sacrifices of wildland firefighters and support personnel.

From the National Interagency Fire Center:

“NWFFD highlights the commitment of wildland firefighters, including federal, state, local, Tribal, military, and contract personnel. This day is particularly meaningful as it falls during the Week of Remembrance, which runs from June 30 to July 6. This week serves as a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to renew the commitment to firefighter safety.”

The bureau owes an enormous debt of gratitude to those who have served to battle wildland fires in our Commonwealth and beyond. It takes a special type of courage and a sense of civic duty to step onto the front lines. Their efforts have saved lives, property, and countless acres of forests. Their actions come with a cost, and for some, it’s the ultimate sacrifice.

Some wildland firefighters save the lives of those in the public, while months or years before, instructors indirectly do so through advanced training of firefighters who become prepared to effectively fight fires while protecting themselves, their colleagues, and others. Their cumulative efforts and impacts not only benefit Pennsylvanians, but many other communities throughout the nation.

The heart of the wildland firefighter represents all the best of humanity. The sacrifice, potentially of one’s own life, for the common good is nothing short of selfless. It deserves our utmost respect, support, honor, and thanks.

It is clear that the services of our wildland firefighters will remain a great need presently, and perhaps more so in the future. We couldn’t be prouder to lead one of the finest assemblages of wildland firefighters in the world.

On behalf of the entire DCNR Bureau of Forestry:

We see you. We thank you, immensely. You are our heroes!
