Equity and Inclusion
Conservation is crucial but not sufficient for ensuring that all people have the opportunity to prosper in healthy communities. What relationship does conservation have with the pervasive, tangled problems brought on by slavery, Jim Crow, and the public policies and norms that disproportionately harm people of color to this day?
The creation of a more just society cannot be assigned as a task to specialists. It cannot be achieved by the dispossessed acting alone. And there is no one strategy to accomplish it. Rather, a more just society requires conscious thinking and multiple strategies and actions carried out by diverse peoples and organizations.
WeConservePA is committed to providing a variety of programming that helps individuals and conservation organizations foster opportunity for all and guard against exclusionary practices in organizational internal affairs and service delivery.
Programming
WeConservePA plans and implements programming that helps individuals and conservation organizations foster opportunity for all and guard against exclusionary practices in organizational internal affairs and service delivery. This covers WeConservePA training, networking, and inspirational events, as well as other services. WeConservePA further supports initiatives that encourage a greater diversity of people to connect with the land (through trails, nature play, or other pathways) and join in the work of conservation.

Background
In 2020, WeConservePA initiated the creation of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Community open to anyone working in the field of conservation to provide people a forum to share experiences, learn about and advance effective practices, and identify opportunities to individually and collectively promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in conservation work and organizations. Interested people self-selected themselves to participate and shape the Community’s future. Following two years of WeConservePA support, the Community elected in 2022 to become a fully independent body.

Natural resources and the public estate
The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania’s public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations yet to come. As trustee of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people.(May 18, 1971, P.L.769, J.R.3)
