A ribbon cutting ceremony was held last week celebrating the new, accessible Schuylkill Haven Island Park Water landing. The park may be familiar due to the fact that it has been the starting point of the annual Schuylkill River Sojourn. The park itself is large, multi-use, community asset that serves the town of Schuylkill Haven and beyond with athletic fields, a pavilion, a new amphitheater, and now an amazing water landing with accessible parking and native landscaping.
ARRO Consulting Inc. provided engineering services for the landing and construction contractor was Andy Aungst. The total project cost was approximately $150,000, funded by a PA Fish and Boat Commission Boating Facilities Grant, the William Penn Foundation, and DCNR. Schuylkill Haven Borough, Schuylkill River Greenways and the National Park System also contributed to the development of this landing.
Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area is grateful to everyone involved in this project. Local officials have shared that use of the landing has already doubled in the few weeks it’s been open. Local outfitter, Mad Dog River Rentals joined us, and the hardworking Schuylkill Haven Parks and Rec employees jumped right in and had a nice paddle from the new landing. There are still a few final details to finish, but the landing is open for use.
