Waste Management and Recycling

Please use this topic for discussions related to municipal waste management and recycling.

Southeastern Pennsylvania EAC – Solid Waste Reduction Coalition

A new coalition of Environmental Advisory Councils has formed around the issue of solid waste reduction. Single-use plastic bags cannot be recycled and are an enormous solid waste issue that can clog intake pipes and landfills. Burning these bags creates toxic pollution, resulting in CO2 and methane production.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Single-Use Plastics Coalition is comprised of 20 township EACs (and growing) that are all working on ordinances banning the use of single-use plastic bags. We work with Penn Environment and the Clean Air Council. Some in our group have already passed ordinances, many are very close, while others are still in the beginning stages. We have developed a Google repository of helpful info including FAQ’s, ordinance templates, survey designs, articles, and meeting minutes which could be of use to others starting along this path.

The coalition meets roughly every 6 weeks over zoom and we would love to have you join us. In numbers is strength; the more communities come on board, the easier it will be for all of us to get our ordinances passed by Boards of Commissioners.

If you have questions, or would like to join our August coalition meeting, please contact me.

Thanks, and hope to hear from you.
